Almost Spring Break...

This break is going to be much appreciated! Just to be able to relax, catch up on sleep and a few assignments. This week has been short but very busy! In Social Studies Methods this week I have enjoyed diving into the discovery of Zealandia, possibly the hidden 8th continent. This is the current event that Megan and I chose to talk about in our Global Citizenship project. I really liked linking a learning experience to a current event because of the value that I believe students will see in the activities. I think students will love getting engaged in real world events and having it connected to their learning. This connects to NCPTS standard 3C teachers recognize the interconnectedness of content areas/disciplines because teachers should promote global awareness by connecting learning to current events.

This week in my outside learning I found another formative assessment method, the technique is called ABC Summaries. Each student is assigned a different letter of the alphabet and they must come up with a word that starts with that letter. The word must also be related to something they learned in that lesson. Students could also write a short explanation of why the word connects to the topic. I will definitely use this method in my future classroom because students are required to think out of the box and search their vocabulary to come up with a word to connect to the topic. They also must explain their reasoning which shows critical thinking skills.

  1. Colleen, I totally agree that this will be a much appreciated and much needed break! I think your global citizenship project was great and so interesting. I agree that kids will be so much more interested in topics like these that pertain to their life and the real world. The ABC summaries sounds like a great formative assessment tool. I think students will also enjoy that and students can learn from each other if they share the letter they had with the class.

  2. Colleen, It is so interesting that you would write about this because my students at Washington were just learning about continents. I wish I would have known about this then. I could have blown them away. I agree that this break is much needed. I hope you have a great one. :)

  3. Colleen, I'm really excited about your Global Citizenship Project about Zealandia. We often discuss many different teaching strategies, differentiation, and technology in ssed307, but we really don't get to discuss social studies. I look forward to reading it. I also like the assessment you shared ABC summaries. This upcoming week I'll share a math assessment I learned about in clinicals.

  4. Colleen, I loved learning about Zealandia. I never knew that even existed. I connected what you found about the new continent to what my students were learning at Washington. Very interesting. This break will be very much needed from the workload that we have been having. I hope you enjoy and catch up on what you need. Be safe and enjoy!

  5. Colleen,

I really thought you did a great job on the global citizenship presentation and I loved your topic! As I said in my feedback, you taught me a lot through the presentation and I think it would be very engaging for students. I love this form of assessment, too! I have never heard of this but I would love to use this in my classroom. It is such a creative way to test for understanding and students wouldn't even recognize it as assessment. Thank you for sharing about this!

  6. Colleen, great post! I really enjoyed your global citizenship project for this week! I like that in your blog you talked about how it was a learning experience and a connection to global citizenship. The ABC summary assessment technique is really cool and I will put this in my resource kit for my future classroom because that is a great way to assess your students.
