Back to Reality...

This week was our first week back from spring break and it's already been a busy week! This week at Washington we had the opportunity to watch the students during their lunch and give the teachers a duty free lunch. This was an awesome chance to give back to the teachers that have provided us with such a great experience!

This week for my outside research I found another form of formative assessment. This assessment is called One Minute Essay. Students simply respond in one minute to a question or prompt. The question should however require a short answer that will not frustrate the students. This method allows the teacher to see the students first thoughts when given a topic as they have only one minute to respond. I would use this method in my classroom as either review or as a pre-assement to find out what students already know about a topic. This relates to standard 4B, teachers plan instruction appropriate for their students because the teachers must either know the students prior knowledge or assess their level of understanding during a lesson.

  1. I love this idea of the one minute essay that you explained! It is so true that the students can so easily be frustrated and stressed out when they think of explaining what they have learned. Also, the fact that there isn't much time for the students to ponder really gives us an idea of what the students are initially thinking when they are asked to elaborate on their thought process!

  2. The One minute essay is a cool idea. I wonder how it would work though if you allow them one minute to think over the question/prompt and then one minute to answer it. I know I always freeze up when I have such a time limit and it takes me a moment to gather my thoughts before I can form an answer. I think the moment to think about their answer before hand might prove to be helpful to the students.

  4. It has definitely been a busy week, for sure! I greatly enjoyed participating in Duty Free Lunch at Washington, but my brain was so zapped afterwards. That's probably from being around so many children for 3 straight hours. That delicious Mi Pubs was well worth it afterwards. I think one minute essays are a neat idea, as long as there is a short answer requirement. I do feel like timed essays would stress me out, if I were back in elementary school, but that's because timed tests have always freaked me out. I love your idea of using it as a pre-assessment or benchmark to see where students are! Great post!
